Network 23 Non-Manifesto. [full version]

Network 23, an experiment in "Positive-Information Techknology". The aim is to get people on a mission, in touch with each other for the mutual facilitation of missions. The emphasis is on having fun, getting worthwhile things done, and reducing everyone's dependence on political and corporate institutions.

What does that actually mean?

At New Covent Garden in London, oranges cost about 3p each. At Tesco's supermarket in Covent Garden, they cost about 20p each. Tesco's aren't ripping anyone off: they just take a profit on the fact that people are too busy and out of contact with each other. Imagine that a group of people who are really into oranges meet each other over the Internet. They find that some of them live close to each other. They get organised and take it in turns to go to the market and buy oranges in bulk. They can now afford all the oranges they can possibly want, and get connected to orange lovers everywhere who sort them out rare high quality oranges. Plus, they get to know each other and have a laugh eating all those lovely oranges....

This isn't really about oranges, is it?

Well, no. It's about everything. People, music, parties, sunshine, intoxicants, trees, transport, fiction, information, reality, surreality, recipes for flapjacks, and everything else.
The Network 23 take on life is that everyone is talented and has unique gifts : by bringing talented and gifted people together, and sharing missions, a connected community can become an unstoppable force.

Network 23 has its roots in free parties, and started to get organised around the time of the Criminal Justice Bill protest. Our Inspiration? The massive unification of diverse people bringing about an intense atmosphere of positive change. Our vision is now wider, we are still well up for parties, and started to get organised around the time of the Criminal Justice Bill protest summer of 1993. Although the vision is now wider, we are still well up for parties, music and lateral creativity.

Are you lot anarchists, paranoids, pot-heads, subversives, or just plain weird?

We do our best, and invite you to join the fun. Network 23 is non-political, though we do have a social agenda: the wish to make the world more liveable by getting people together and making good idea become a reality.
What ever your interests and ideals, Network 23 is for you. The more people get connected, and the more diverse their missions are, the stronger the network will be.

All mouth, no trousers?

Trousers all the way. Our legs have never seen the light of day. This is how it works:
Network 23 has an Internet site at http://www.network23.org run by several geographically dispirate people. It is the hub of a global network with satellite sites in Barcelona, Bristol, London, Manchester, The Midlands, Norfolk, Prague, Paris, USA [central] and San Franciso. This means that if any individual government censors our content, the address www.network23.org will simply take people to the same information mirrored on one of the other sites. This and a range of optional privacy and anonymity measures mean that the network is relatively strong and safe for its users.

What is on the site?

Have a look and find out!

How can I help?
The site has an open bulletin info mail board where you can state your mission and meet other people on theirs. You can go there now, check out what people are saying, and see if you can be of any use to each other. We need energetic open-minded and friendly contributors to get involved now. There is an open forum on content, so do your bit to shape the future of the network.

In a nutshell?

DIY information culture. We're global with links to what people are doing locally. Network 23 is an alternative non-profit information channel designed to meet the expectations of thousands of hits. The network's decentralised structure will allow us to be uncompromising about the content of the site. Check your programming. This is Network 23, the network that means business, now transmitting live to the world....Please help us create the network; check out and contribute to the discussion groups on www.network23.org. Knowledge is power. Tell us what you want to see. Tell us what you have to give. Tell us Who, What and Where we should direct our readers to.

What can you bring to the N23work? What projects? What ideas? What data? What talents? What you waiting for?
